ArtioSense Force Detector

Helping surgeons position artificial hips to improve surgical outcomes.

Project Description

Sanner partnered with ArtioSense and the University of Cambridge to develop the form factor, electronics and concept digital user interface for an innovative surgical aid used during total hip replacement procedures. The device provides orthopedic surgeons with real-time force measurements to support improved implant positioning and surgical outcomes.

The Challenge

The project required the integration of highly novel sensor technology within an extremely compact surgical device. The system needed to accurately detect subtle force imbalances inside the hip joint while operating within a constrained geometry. Equally important was presenting complex sensor data in a simple, intuitive format for surgeons who traditionally rely solely on clinical judgement without quantitative feedback.

Our Approach

Sanner carried out early-stage feasibility studies to evaluate the performance of highly sensitive sensor technology within the demanding environment of the hip joint. Our team designed compact custom electronics, incorporating flexible and rigid PCBs with Bluetooth connectivity. We successfully integrated the electronics with the mechanical design and microfluidic system while maintaining the required size and performance.

UX/UI Design

Working closely with clinicians, Sanner developed a concept user interface that translated complex sensor measurements into clear, actionable information.

Results

Sanner delivered proof-of-principle prototypes that demonstrated the technology and supported future investment opportunities. The project significantly reduced technical risk by transferring the sensor concept into a manufacturing process suitable for scalable production.

The compact electronic architecture enabled reliable Bluetooth transmission of sensor data, while the concept user interface provided surgeons with an intuitive way to interpret force measurements. Feedback from key opinion leaders informed critical design decisions and positioned the technology for progression towards clinical trials.
