Alfavet Dia Tab® Chewable Tablets

Packaging That Reflects the Product: Sanner’s Sustainable Solution for Alfavet.

Project Description

Discover how Sanner provided Alfavet a primary packaging solution that is as natural-based and environmentally friendly as their Dia Tab® Chewable Tablets for cats and dogs.

The Challenge

Alfavet Tierarzneimittel GmbH is a German veterinary healthcare company that distributes veterinary medicines and dietary supplements to veterinary practices throughout Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, where the products are either used in practice or sold directly to pet owners.

They’re known for using largely natural, especially plant-based ingredients in their products. Alfavet’s Dia Tab® chewable tablets, which help alleviate acute intestinal absorption disorders in dogs and cats, are made from apples, citrus, and carrot pomace as well as other plant-based components that provide important phytonutrients.

Alfavet wanted to find a packaging solution that not only reflects the natural ingredients of their Dia Tab® tablets but also ensures optimal product protection and practical usability. In 2022, alfavet started searching for the right packaging partner and found Sanner. Alfavet selected Sanner for its world’s most comprehensive portfolio of tubes with matching desiccant closures, backed by decades of expertise and extensive, flexible production capabilities. They were convinced by Sanner’s BioBase® tubes made from renewable raw materials and then replaced the initial packaging solution for Dia Tab® tablets with our sustainable solution.

With Sanner’s BioBase® tubes and closures, we delivered a packaging solution made from over 90% renewable materials. In 2025, we worked with them to further improve the sustainability of their packaging by implementing closures with Sanner’s tethered cap which has a TE safety ring that remains firmly attached to the tube. The BioBase® closures featuring Sanner’s tethered cap became commercially available in July 2026.

This means that the Dia Tab® tablet packaging is now more than 90% sustainable, and all packaging components can be recycled together.

Our Approach

Our sustainable packaging solution stands out from the competition thanks to its Sanner BioBase® components. It consists of more than 90% biomass, derived from renewable sources such as corn, sugarcane, or cellulose, which is subsequently polymerized.

Overall, the production of bio-based polyethylene (bio-PE) generates approximately 15% lower CO₂e emissions than conventional petroleum-based plastics, primarily because the renewable raw materials absorb CO₂ during their growth. All materials comply with EU regulations for food contact applications, making them suitable for use in alfavet’s product without further modification.

In addition to its sustainability benefits, Sanner BioBase® offers enhanced product protection. The material’s low water vapor permeability increases the shelf life of packaged products by around 40%.

For the packaging solution of Dia Tab® tablets, we combined our IML (In-Mold Labeling) tubes and our DASG-1 closures from our manufacturing site in Bensheim, Germany. The proven Sanner DASG-1 closure features a spiral, tamper-evident design and an integrated silica gel moisture adsorber that delivers reliable, permanent protection against moisture, helping to maintain the quality and stability of the plant-based ingredients in the chewable tablets over the long term.

Additionally, the tethered cap allows all packaging components to be recycled together and reduces the environmental impact caused by microplastics.

Results

Sanner continues to manufacture alfavet’s Dia Tab® tablet packaging, the BioBase® tubes and closures featuring Sanner’s Tethered Cap.This sustainable packaging solution is very well received by alfavet’s customers.

Alfavet’s success shows that combining a natural product with packaging that offers product protection, user-friendliness, and sustainability was the right choice for the company. Building on this success, the company plans to expand the use of Sanner BioBase® tubes across additional products over time.

Previously available only in Germany, alfavet’s Dia Tab® tablet packaging solution, featuring BioBase® tubes and closures with Sanner’s Tethered Cap, is now being launched in Switzerland and Austria, with further expansion across Europe planned in the near future.
